John Carter Brown Library

THE JOHN CARTER BROWN LIBRARY is an independently administered and funded center for advanced research in history and the humanities, founded in 1846 and located at Brown University since 1901. Housed within the library's walls is an internationally renowned collection of primary historical sources pertaining to North and South America from the time of its discovery by Europeans (ca. 1492) until the end of the colonial period (ca. 1825).

Ricardo de-la-Main professor, y expositor de la musica, assi antigua, como moderna, à espenses de 30. años de continua taréa, ha descubierto prodigiosos secretos en la musica, y ha explicado sus mayores difficultades, las quales (para el provecho comum) solicíta dar à la luz publica, en dos libros, (yá promptos para la imprenta) muy necessarios para todos los que assisten en choro, assi religiosos, como religiosas. En primero es: Exposicion de la musica ecclesiastica, y alivio para subchantres. El segundo es: Exposicion de la musica antigua, y de la musica viadana, ò el arte de acompañar a lo moderno. : Dispuesto en methodo facilissimo, de tal fuerte, que todo está explicado por la mano, y adequado para la enseñanza de las niñas de la escoleta de el recogimiento voluntario de San Miguel de Bethlehem de esta ciudad de Mexico, fundada en el año de 1738. por el Ilmo. y Exc. Sr. Dr. D. Juan Antonio de Bizarron, y Eguiarreta, sie[n]do arzobispo de Mexico, y vi-rey de la Nueva-España; y para que dichos secretos, y difficultades lleguen à la noticia de los maestros en la Europa, los publíca, y los embia à Roma; à la Academia Real de Paris, à las Universidades de Mompellier, Salamanca, Alcalá, y à las cathedrales de Toledo, y Sevilla, para que los puedan juzgar, y censurar los mexores, y mas aventajados maestros; y à vista de estos indices puedan dár sus pareceres, si (dichos libros) fueren provechosos para los señores ecclesiasticos, y dignos de la imprenta; siendo el methodo tan radical, que se puede (en termino de seis meses) comprehender todo el arte de la musica, sin fatigar la memoria, y se excusa el immenso travajo de registrar tantos libros, y obras, haziendo observaciones practicas por dilatados años
